View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] South Korea is expected to make it significantly easier to export hydrogen vehicles overseas by securing internationally accredited technology to verify the performance of materials used in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
The Hydrogen Energy Materials Research Team at the Safety Measurement Research Institute of the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) announced on the 24th that they have developed a system capable of measuring hydrogen embrittlement in metal materials used in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles under low-temperature, high-pressure hydrogen gas environments, and successfully evaluated the performance of these materials.
The institute completed an international comparison of evaluation technologies for the suitability of metal materials for hydrogen use together with the United States, Japan, and Germany. This is expected to greatly assist in exporting domestically produced hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to overseas countries such as the US and Europe.
Materials exposed to hydrogen gas experience hydrogen embrittlement damage. Hydrogen embrittlement refers to the phenomenon where hydrogen penetrates materials such as metals, causing brittleness, which can lead to critical damage in hydrogen energy products. To safely utilize hydrogen energy, it is necessary to sufficiently verify the performance of the materials under actual usage conditions.
Recently, as eco-friendly hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have been distributed worldwide, methodologies to prevent and manage hydrogen embrittlement have emerged. In particular, since hydrogen embrittlement in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is directly related to vehicle safety, international performance evaluation and accreditation are required.

To proactively address these issues, the KRISS Hydrogen Energy Materials Research Team developed a system to measure hydrogen embrittlement in metal materials used in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles under low-temperature, high-pressure hydrogen gas environments and successfully evaluated the materials' performance. By tensile testing metal materials in a hydrogen gas environment at minus 50 ℃ and 875 bar and comparing the results with those in air, the degree of sensitivity to hydrogen gas, i.e., hydrogen embrittlement, can be measured to determine whether the material is suitable for use in hydrogen environments.
