Trump SNS Tops Apple App Store in Less Than a Day After Launch
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The social networking service (SNS) platform 'Truth Social' created by former U.S. President Donald Trump ranked number one on the U.S. Apple App Store immediately after its launch.
On the 21st (local time), U.S. economic media CNBC reported, "Truth Social, which was launched just before midnight the previous day, rose to number one in the App Store's free app popularity ranking from the morning."
This SNS, produced by Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), had been operating a beta (trial) service for a limited number of users until now.
As general users flocked to the platform, a waiting list for account registration also appeared. CNBC reported, "Many users experienced difficulties registering accounts or received messages saying 'You have been placed on a waiting list due to a surge in users.'"
After refusing to accept defeat in the November 2020 presidential election, former President Trump was banned from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms for continuously spreading false information.
TMTG, led by former Republican Congressman Devin Nunes, positions itself as a defender of press freedom and aims for people whose opinions have been suppressed on existing platforms to use the app.
CEO Nunes said in an interview with Fox News on the same day, "We expect it to be fully operational within the United States by at least the end of March."
Foreign media analyze that former President Trump's launch of his own SNS on the day before 'Presidents' Day' reflects his intention to regain presence on social media, suggesting a challenge for the next presidential election.
