It is no longer the old image overshadowed by England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Since the beginning of the new year, Leona Maguire has been gaining attention by winning on the U.S. Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour. Ireland is the country where the first golf course was established in 1858. The Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) was founded in 1891, and the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU) in 1893. Golf, along with soccer and swimming, is especially popular. Ireland has the fourth highest number of golf courses per capita in the world.
Leona Maguire, who turned professional in 2018, is the leading figure of the ‘Ireland wave.’ On the 6th, she achieved a commanding 3-stroke victory at the LPGA Drive On Championship, the third event of the 2022 LPGA Tour season, held at Crown Colony Golf Club in Fort Myers, Florida. It was her thrilling first win in her 36th tournament since her debut in 2020. She also earned the distinction of being the first Irish-born LPGA Tour champion. Her world ranking soared from 37th to 20th.
"I never thought this would happen," she exclaimed, "I am proud of myself." Maguire stood out since her amateur days. While attending Duke University in the U.S., she was selected four times for the WGCA (Women’s Golf Coaches Association) First Team All-America. She boasts an impressive record including three ACC Player of the Year awards and two Annika Awards. She held the No. 1 spot in the amateur world rankings for an astonishing 135 weeks.
This surpasses Lydia Ko’s 130 weeks (New Zealand), making it the longest record in this category. It is interesting that Maguire performed well in the Olympics, finishing tied for 21st at the 2016 Rio Olympics and tied for 23rd at the Tokyo Olympics last year. She made her debut at the 2021 Solheim Cup, a women’s golf competition between Europe and the U.S., where she recorded 4 wins and 1 draw in 5 matches, showcasing her presence. Thanks to Maguire’s performance, Europe won 15-13. In 2019, she secured a full card by finishing 7th on the Symetra (second-tier) Tour money list and has been active since.
On the U.S. Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour, S?amus Power has demonstrated Ireland’s strength. On the 7th, he tied for 9th place at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which concluded at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. He led by 5 strokes through the second round and came close to his second career win. Power joined the Korn Ferry (second-tier) Tour in 2015 and the PGA Tour in 2017. In July last year, he tasted the joy of his first career victory after a playoff at the Barbasol Championship.
