[Asia Economy Reporters Junyi Park and Hyunji Kwon] Yoon Seok-yeol, the People Power Party's presidential candidate, criticized the cause of rising housing prices in Jongno, known as the "political number one district," saying it was "(the Democratic Party's) deliberate act."
On the 17th, during a campaign speech in front of Dongmyo Station in Jongno-gu, Seoul, Yoon said, "Even under this government, housing policies have been changed 28 times, but they have continuously failed. Do you think this is a mistake?"
He pointed out, "The Democratic Party controlled the Seoul mayor's office for 10 years, raising housing prices, and Seoul led the nationwide housing price trend. They blocked redevelopment and reconstruction, and since people want new homes but none are being built, housing prices inevitably rise." He added, "These people (Democratic Party) always hypocritically claim to care for workers, the common people, the socially vulnerable, and the homeless, but have they ever truly benefited them?"
Regarding the comprehensive real estate tax, he said, "They pushed it through under the huge misconception that since only 2% of the people are subject to the tax, if they hit hard, 2% will vote for People Power Party and 98% for the Democratic Party." He questioned, "But if a father in the metropolitan area pays the comprehensive real estate tax, does the child benefit?" implying that the tax negatively affects ordinary citizens as well.
On the current government's 'income-led growth' policy, he criticized, "The Democratic Party government has advocated this from the start, but those who know something say it is not a growth theory but an outdated leftist theory."
He mentioned the government's failure to block entry from Wuhan, China, where COVID-19 initially spread massively in early 2020, saying, "Experts from the Korean Medical Association earnestly requested this government six times during the Lunar New Year holidays to block entry from China." He added, "But this government always submits to North Korea and China. They did not block it."
He also criticized the education field, saying, "Democratic Party people control all the education superintendents and local governments and education offices, working together to implement so-called innovative education." He said, "They are teaching children political and ideological education." Yoon criticized, "Teachers from the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU) even prevent students from taking basic academic assessments. If students just learn roughly and are told 'Live relying on the government,' how can the country prosper?"
Meanwhile, during the campaign, Yoon appeared alongside former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min and former Board of Audit and Inspection chief Choi Jae-hyung, presenting a 'One-team' image. The three held hands with bright smiles and posed with a 'banzai' gesture.
At the rally, former lawmaker Yoo said, "Today, I met Yoon candidate directly in Yeouido and came here to actively support regime change unconditionally," adding, "Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, will continue the failures of the Moon Jae-in administration. Shouldn't we change that? Will you change it with our candidate Yoon?"
