View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] Amid escalating issues in Ukraine, Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed the Ukraine situation and other matters in a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron on the 16th.
The state-run China Central Television (CCTV) reported that during the call, President Xi stated regarding the Ukraine issue that "the relevant countries should fully utilize multilateral platforms, including the Normandy format talks, within the broad direction of a political solution," and added, "The Ukraine issue should be comprehensively resolved through dialogue and negotiation."
The Normandy format talks mentioned by President Xi refer to the negotiation framework involving Russia, Ukraine, Germany, and France, aimed at resolving the conflict between the Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatist rebels in the Donbas region of Ukraine, which borders Russia.
Previously, the four countries' leaders signed the Minsk peace agreement in February 2015, outlining a plan for peace settlement in the Donbas region. However, armed clashes between government forces and rebels in the area have continued.
CCTV also reported that President Macron explained his views on the current situation in Ukraine to President Xi, but did not specify the details of Macron’s opinions.
Additionally, the two leaders exchanged views on bilateral cooperation in agriculture, finance, aviation enterprises, and other areas of bilateral exchange.

On the 15th (local time), President Macron also held a phone call with U.S. President Joe Biden. During the approximately one-hour call, President Macron and President Biden agreed on the need to verify whether the partial withdrawal of Russian troops from the Ukraine border area is factual.
