Game Industry M&A Continues... Sony Acquires US Developer 'Bungie' for 4.36 Trillion Won
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Sony Interactive Entertainment, the gaming division of Japan's Sony Group, has acquired Bungie, a U.S. game developer known for the Halo and Destiny series, for $3.6 billion (approximately 4.36 trillion KRW). Analysts note that this follows a wave of major mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the gaming industry, including Microsoft (MS).
According to CNN and other outlets on the 31st (local time), Sony confirmed the acquisition in a statement, saying, "Bungie creates and continuously evolves some of the world's most beloved video game franchises."
Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, described the move as "a strategic step to further develop the gaming experiences we have built," adding, "Bungie's expertise in world-class service approaches and long-term community engagement is highly attractive." He also mentioned that Bungie will participate in developing live service titles for PlayStation Studios in the future.
Based in Washington state, Bungie is the developer behind hit franchises such as Halo and Destiny. However, Halo is a game for Microsoft's Xbox, not Sony's PlayStation. The Destiny series, a shooting game, had a contract with Activision that ended in 2019. Bungie employs approximately 900 people.
Industry observers are particularly noting that this M&A occurred less than two weeks after Microsoft's announcement to acquire Activision Blizzard. Microsoft is expected to accelerate subscription-based gaming services, similar to Netflix, through the Blizzard acquisition.

Additionally, big tech companies like Amazon and Netflix are expanding their influence in the gaming industry, leading to expectations of intensified competition in the subscription-based gaming service market. Earlier, Take-Two Interactive Software also announced plans to acquire Zynga for $12.7 billion. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing PitchBook data, reported that M&A activity across the gaming industry nearly tripled from $8.9 billion in 2020 to $26.2 billion in 2021.
