The National Election Commission bans live broadcast of the two-party debate... People Power Party "Condemns" · People's Party "Welcomes"
Broadcasting Relay Denied Through Election Commission's Voter Interpretation
Real-Time Internet Relay Only Possible via Candidate YouTube Channels
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The political sphere showed mixed reactions to the Central Election Commission's ruling that live broadcasting and full video recording of the one-on-one debate between presidential candidates Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party and Yoon Seok-youl of the People Power Party are prohibited.
According to political sources on the 30th, the Election Commission judged that live broadcasting or full video recording of the debate negotiated by the ruling and opposition parties is illegal. Broadcasting or posting the full video on media companies' YouTube channels is banned.
What is allowed is internet live streaming through the candidates' own YouTube channels and posting the live stream link on each party's homepage. The debate can only be used to the extent that it can be utilized for broadcast news coverage.
Originally, both parties planned to broadcast the one-on-one debate through the three major terrestrial broadcasters, but due to injunction requests to ban broadcasts by Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party and Sim Sang-jung of the Justice Party, they intended to hold the debate under the two parties' supervision and pursue retransmission through comprehensive programming channels.
However, the Election Commission's ruling blocked even this workaround.
The People Power Party plans to issue a statement at 11 a.m. today condemning the Election Commission's illegal election interference.
On the other hand, the People’s Party stated, "Due to the Election Commission's ruling on the entrenched one-on-one debate, any form of broadcast relay has become impossible," and evaluated that "the inappropriateness of the one-on-one debate has already been proven to the entire nation through court rulings." Kwon Young-hyun, spokesperson for the People’s Party election campaign committee, demanded, "We urge not to insist on the battered one-on-one debate any longer, to regain common sense that has gone astray, and to return to a multi-party debate stage to compete fairly and honorably before the people."
