Seoul Eastern District Court Issues Arrest Warrant
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] A public official at the Gangdong District Office in Seoul has been arrested on charges of embezzling more than 10 billion won in public funds.
The Seoul Eastern District Court issued an arrest warrant on the 26th for Mr. A, a public official in his 40s accused of embezzlement under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes, citing concerns over evidence destruction and flight risk.
Mr. A is suspected of embezzling approximately 11.5 billion won from funds allocated for the installation of waste treatment facilities, which the Gangdong District Office received from the Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH) and others.
The crime was uncovered after Mr. A’s successor detected signs of embezzlement and reported it to the district office. It is reported that Mr. A stated he lost the embezzled money through stock investments.
