Gwangyang City Council Holds Meeting on Current Issues with Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority
The Assembly Should Uphold the Purpose of Establishing the Port Corporation and Strive for the Development of Gwangyang Port
The Port Corporation Will Endeavor to Generate Cargo Volume by Building a Smart Port
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] The Gwangyang City Council of Jeollanam-do (Chairman Jin Su-hwa) held a meeting with Park Seong-hyun, President of Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority, on the 25th in the council consultation room.
This meeting took place immediately after the council issued a statement urging the withdrawal of Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority's position on the public development of the Yeosu World Expo site.
During the meeting, council members pointed out that "the port authority, which started by inheriting a debt of 1.1344 trillion won from the Korea Container Terminal Corporation at its launch, has used 82% of its revenue over the past 10 years to repay the debt, resulting in Gwangyang Port having low competitiveness due to insufficient infrastructure."
They added, "The citizens of Gwangyang waited 10 years for the port authority to secure financial soundness, and now they expect the full-scale expansion of infrastructure such as hinterland facilities of Gwangyang Port to proceed."
However, they condemned, "It is an irresponsible act that ignores the citizens of Gwangyang who have waited for over 10 years, for Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority to become the subject of public development and post-utilization of the Yeosu Expo site, which is not in line with the purpose of its establishment, and to promote the tourism industry."
Chairman Jin Su-hwa emphasized, "Now, the port authority must develop Gwangyang Port by securing competitiveness through the construction of port facility infrastructure and generating cargo volume."
President Park Seong-hyun stated, "We will do our utmost to develop Gwangyang Port by creating cargo volume through the expansion of smart port infrastructure and the full-scale establishment of an eco-friendly port."
