[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Starting this year, the tuition support for children attending kindergartens and daycare centers will increase by 20,000 KRW.
On the 25th, the Ministry of Education announced that the monthly tuition support per child for public kindergartens has been set at 100,000 KRW, and the tuition and childcare fees per child for private kindergartens and daycare centers have been set at 280,000 KRW.
The tuition support for public kindergarten children was increased from 60,000 KRW to 80,000 KRW per month last year under the Nuri Curriculum support, and has been further raised to 100,000 KRW this year. The tuition and childcare fee support for private kindergartens and daycare centers has been raised for four consecutive years: 220,000 KRW per month in 2019, 240,000 KRW in 2020, 260,000 KRW in 2021, and 280,000 KRW this year.
Kindergartens can determine tuition fees within the upper limit of a 1.0% increase this year, and may charge parents the remaining amount after deducting government support from the tuition fees.
With this year's increase in support, the government subsidy for public kindergartens will total 150,000 KRW per child, including 50,000 KRW for after-school programs, and for private kindergartens, the total will be 350,000 KRW, including 70,000 KRW for after-school programs.
Additionally, the Ministry of Education will provide an extra 150,000 KRW, which is 50,000 KRW more than last year, to legally low-income children attending private kindergartens.
