Biden to Discuss 'Ukraine Situation' with EU Leaders Today... Reviewing Military Deployment
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] U.S. President Joe Biden, judging that the possibility of Russia invading Ukraine has increased, will discuss countermeasures with European leaders on the 24th (local time).
According to CNBC and others, President Biden will hold a video conference at 3 p.m. Eastern Time with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission (EU), Charles Michel, President of the EU Council, Emmanuel Macron, President of France, Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany, Mario Draghi, Prime Minister of Italy, Andrzej Duda, President of Poland, Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
At this meeting, plans such as deploying troops and weapons near the Ukrainian border will be reviewed.
An anonymous administration official told NBC News that discussions are underway among NATO member countries about deploying troops to Eastern Europe, but President Biden has not yet issued deployment orders.
This follows the Biden administration's order the previous day to withdraw families of embassy staff stationed in Ukraine. The U.S. State Department stated in a release that there are reports Russia is planning a significant military action targeting Ukraine. Following the U.S., the British government also issued withdrawal orders, and it is reported that half of the embassy staff in Ukraine have already left.
Weapons supported by the U.S. and its allies have also been arriving in Ukraine one after another. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, 90 tons of weapons, including anti-tank weapons and missiles worth $200 million (approximately 239 billion KRW) promised by the U.S. last month, recently arrived in Ukraine via air and land routes.

The Washington Post (WP), citing multiple officials, reported that the Biden administration is preparing to regulate exports of products related to artificial intelligence and quantum computing to strike at strategic industries that President Vladimir Putin is focusing on in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. The outlet added that if sanctions are expanded as they were applied to China's Huawei, exports of smartphones, tablets, and video game consoles could also be banned.
