[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) announced on the 20th at 11:30 a.m. that the Dongdaemun-gu Social Welfare Council (Chairman Park Sang-jong) delivered love rice to neighbors in need in celebration of the traditional Korean holiday, Seollal.
Ahead of Seollal, the Dongdaemun-gu Social Welfare Council delivered 500 bags of 10kg Sangju Sambaek rice (equivalent value 13.5 million KRW) to help marginalized groups who are having a difficult time due to strengthened social distancing measures to have a warm holiday. The delivered rice will be distributed to low-income families residing in Dongdaemun-gu.
The delivery ceremony was held with the attendance of Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, Park Sang-jong, Chairman of the Dongdaemun-gu Social Welfare Council, four other chairpersons, and the secretary-general.
At the ceremony, Park Sang-jong, Chairman of the Dongdaemun-gu Social Welfare Council, said, “Although this winter is harsher for neighbors who are struggling and marginalized due to COVID-19, I hope everyone welcomes a warm New Year with the strength of rice (heart).”
The Dongdaemun-gu Social Welfare Council has been supporting love rice for low-income families every Seollal and Chuseok since 2005. Last year, they provided 400 bags of rice during Seollal and 684 bags during Chuseok, delivering hope to marginalized groups.
Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, expressed deep gratitude to the Dongdaemun-gu Social Welfare Council for delivering love rice again this year for the holiday, saying, “We will make sure the love rice received is delivered to the places where it is most needed so that no residents are left out and everyone can have a warm holiday.”
Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) recently announced that it received a donation of 5 million KRW from the Seongbuk-gu branch of the Korea Association of Realtors Seoul Northern Branch for the ‘Warm Winter Campaign.’
The ‘Warm Winter Campaign’ is a winter neighbor-helping project jointly conducted by the 25 autonomous districts of Seoul and the Seoul Social Welfare Community Chest. The funds and goods raised are used to support living and medical expenses for low-income vulnerable groups within Seongbuk-gu.
Kim Jong-bin, branch chief, said, “I hope this will be a small help to neighbors who are going through a harder time than anyone else due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, and I wish everyone a warm winter without anyone being left out.”
In response, Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, said, “I am grateful for the precious helping hand extended every year despite the difficulties everyone is facing, and the donation will be properly delivered to neighbors in need.”
The Seongbuk-gu branch of the Korea Association of Realtors Seoul Northern Branch was established in 1986 and currently consists of about 880 members. Every year, they gather the will of their members to donate money to neighbors in need and have been steadily practicing neighbor-helping activities in the local community. They also work closely with the Seongbuk-gu Office’s cadastral department to take the lead in establishing a sound real estate transaction order.
Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) delivered a special membership fee of 1 million KRW to the Mapo District Council of the Korean Red Cross Volunteer Association (Chairman Kim Eun-ok) at the mayor’s office on the 20th.
This special membership fee delivery ceremony was held to foster a voluntary fundraising participation atmosphere among residents.
