Korea-US Foreign Ministers Discuss Missiles... Urge North Korea to Respond to Dialogue
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the morning of the 15th, Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong held a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to exchange views on mutual interests including the Korean Peninsula issue, Korea-U.S. relations, and regional and global affairs.
The two ministers discussed the response direction to North Korea's recent ballistic missile launches and emphasized the importance of maintaining a firm combined defense posture based on the strong Korea-U.S. alliance.
They also consulted on ways to restart the Korean Peninsula peace process and urged North Korea to promptly respond to Korea-U.S. efforts to resume dialogue.
The ministers reaffirmed that the Korea-U.S. alliance is a key pillar of peace, stability, and prosperity in Northeast Asia, the Indo-Pacific region, and the world, and evaluated that Korea-U.S. cooperation is developing beyond a bilateral level into a comprehensive and mutually beneficial partnership addressing global challenges together.

In addition, they exchanged views on trilateral cooperation among Korea, the U.S., and Japan, as well as major regional situations including Myanmar and Ukraine. They also evaluated the close cooperation between Korea and the U.S. during the COVID-19 response and agreed to continue strengthening bilateral cooperation to end COVID-19, including expanding vaccine support to developing countries.
