WHO "Over 15 Million New COVID-19 Cases Worldwide Last Week... Record High"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Last week, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide exceeded 15 million, marking the highest weekly record ever.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) weekly statistics, the number of new confirmed cases reported globally between the 3rd and 9th was 15,154,666. This represents a 55% increase compared to the previous week, setting a record high on a weekly basis. The number of deaths was 43,461, a 3% increase from the previous week.
By country, the United States had the highest number of cases at 4,610,359, a 73% increase from the previous week, followed by France (1,597,203 cases, 46%↑), the United Kingdom (1,217,258 cases, 10%↑), Italy (1,014,358 cases, 57%↑), and India (638,872 cases, 524%↑). By continent, all continents except Africa saw a sharp increase in confirmed cases.

By region, Southeast Asia had the highest increase rate at 418%, followed by the Western Pacific region at 122%. The Americas showed a 78% increase, and Europe a 31% increase. Africa was the only continent to see a decrease of 11%. However, the number of deaths in Africa increased significantly by 84%.
