Seogwipo Coast Guard Conducts Joint Inspection to Prevent Fishing Vessel Accidents
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Seogwipo Coast Guard Station (Chief Hwang Junhyun) announced on the 12th that it will conduct special safety inspections with related organizations focusing on fishing vessels under 10 tons, where winter fire accidents frequently occur, until the end of this month to prevent accidents.
On October 11 last year, a fire broke out on fishing vessel A (large purse seine, 199 tons) moored in Seogwipo Port. The chief engineer discovered the fire and extinguished it with a fire extinguisher, but the incident caused soot marks in the restaurant and passageway. In total, five fire accidents occurred on moored fishing vessels in the jurisdiction, but fortunately, there were no casualties.
This inspection is led by the Seogwipo Coast Guard, with joint participation from related organizations such as the Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority, the Fisheries Cooperative, and local governments to conduct special safety inspections.
The main inspection items include ▲ onboard heaters, electrical leakage, fire extinguisher placement and management status ▲ verification of vessel inspection and safety/rescue equipment such as liferafts ▲ introduction of fishing vessel fire accident cases for fishermen and accident prevention education during bad weather.
A Seogwipo Coast Guard official said, “Since initial response is most important in case of fire, we will focus on strengthening fishermen’s safety awareness by identifying fire-prone areas and encouraging self-inspections before departure through this inspection,” adding, “We will continue to promote safety culture and conduct inspection activities to prevent various safety accidents.”
