Having built a relationship of trust through joint development of 5G communication technology, the two companies have decided to expand their cooperation beyond 5G to cover all ICT fields, including semiconductors and the extended virtual world (metaverse).
SK Square announced that Vice Chairman Park met with Cristiano Amon, President of Qualcomm, at CES 2022, the world's largest IT and electronics exhibition held in Las Vegas, USA, on the 6th (local time) to discuss ICT cooperation plans.
Park, who concurrently serves as CEO of SK Square and SK Hynix, met with Qualcomm's key executives alongside Yoo Young-sang, President of SK Telecom, and Lee Seok-hee, President of SK Hynix, as well as other ICT affiliate executives to discuss specific cooperation measures.
In this discussion, SK Hynix, a leader in the memory semiconductor field, agreed to explore joint development of high-speed memory for data center applications and PCs with Qualcomm, which possesses the world's best wireless technology. Due to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and supercomputers, global demand for high-performance memory is rapidly increasing.
SK Telecom, the nation's top mobile carrier, discussed cooperation and investment plans in 5G-related business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) sectors such as metaverse and smart factory businesses. SK Telecom has been promoting comprehensive 5G technology R&D cooperation with Qualcomm since 2015, including the development of 5G device prototypes, and in 2020, they also collaborated on the commercialization of extended reality (XR) technology.
SK Group is also cultivating its own technological capabilities through industry collaboration amid global technological changes. Vice Chairman Park stated, "In the increasingly fierce global ICT competitive environment, global collaboration is not an option but a necessity," adding, "The SK ICT family will lead innovation through seamless ultra-collaboration with global companies across all ICT sectors."
