Jeju Police Records 'Nationwide No.1' in Traffic Fatality Reduction Rate
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Police Agency (Chief Go Gi-cheol) recorded the highest nationwide reduction rate in traffic fatality accidents as of last year.
According to the Jeju Police Agency on the 5th, a total of about 4,300 traffic accidents occurred last year, slightly increasing compared to 4,030 cases in 2020, but the number of fatalities decreased by 26.5%.
The number of deaths caused by traffic accidents in the Jeju area has been continuously decreasing since it recorded 107 in 2013.
Last year's number of traffic accident fatalities was the lowest ever, achieving the largest reduction rate in the past 10 years.
By accident type, ‘vehicle vs. pedestrian’ accounted for 38% (19 people), ‘vehicle vs. vehicle’ 32% (16 people), and ‘single vehicle’ 30% (15 people).
Fatal accidents involving ‘vehicle vs. pedestrian’ decreased by 36.7% compared to the previous year, and among them, pedestrian fatalities aged 65 and older decreased significantly by 46.2%.
By time, 8 out of 19 people (42.1%) occurred between 6 PM and 8 PM, concentrated during sunset hours.
By traffic violation, ‘failure to drive safely (37 out of 50 people)’ accounted for the largest share at 74%, while ‘crossing the center line (3 people)’ and ‘signal violation (3 people)’ each accounted for 6%.
Overall, accidents caused by traffic violations decreased compared to the previous year.
In particular, traffic fatal accidents caused by driver negligence significantly decreased: speeding down 83.3%, signal violations down 62.5%, failure to protect pedestrians down 50%, and crossing the center line down 40%.
Unlicensed driving accidents decreased by 20%, but fatalities due to drunk driving increased by 60%.
By vehicle use, rental car fatal accidents accounted for about 12% of all fatal accidents, increasing by 50% compared to the previous year.
A Jeju Police official said, “We will make every effort to create a safe Jeju without traffic accidents by establishing customized traffic safety measures by season, theme, and region through analysis of traffic accident causes and accident-prone areas, and collaborating with related organizations centered on the Autonomous Police Committee.”
He added, “This year, aiming for zero traffic fatalities, we ask everyone to unite with one heart and one mind to protect the precious lives of our families and neighbors.”
