Additional Investigation of Bullet Holes at Former Jeonnam Provincial Office... Restricted Access for Civilians
"Clear Determination of Bullet Marks... Preserved as a 5·18 Democracy Memorial Asset"
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will conduct additional investigations of bullet marks at the former Jeonnam Provincial Office from the 3rd until the 28th of next month. These are bullet traces presumed to have been fired by martial law troops at citizens during the May 18 Democratic Movement. Gamma-ray imaging will be performed on 525 traces that were not verified in the previous investigation and on metal reactions identified in trees. In the previous investigation, the Ministry found a total of ten traces, including five M16 bullet heads and five bullet marks with embedded bullet heads, in six buildings including the main building of the Jeonnam Provincial Office. An official explained, "We will first determine the presence of bullet marks in the former Jeonnam Provincial Office main building, conference room, police bureau main building, and Sangmugwan," adding, "Investigations of the annex of the provincial office and the police bureau civil service office are scheduled for the second half of the year." During the investigation period, public access within 20 meters of the area will be restricted. The official said, "We apologize for the inconvenience, but we will clearly determine the presence of bullet marks and preserve the identified bullet marks as historical commemorative assets of the May 18 democracy movement."
