Gangwon-do Election Commission Cracks Down on 'Illegal Activities' 180 Days Before Local Elections
Activity Restrictions for Local Government Heads Starting December 3
[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] The Gangwon-do Election Commission announced on the 30th that it will strengthen activities to prevent illegal acts as the nationwide local elections next year are just 180 days away.
According to the provincial election commission, from December 3, which is 180 days before the election day, heads of local governments are prohibited from publishing, distributing, or broadcasting promotional materials aimed at informing about the local government's business plans, implementation results, or activities.
Attendance at cultural lectures held by community centers and events organized by non-public institutions during working hours is also prohibited.
Institutions, organizations, or facilities established or operated by political parties or candidates are not allowed to engage in activities that influence the election.
Additionally, installing or posting signs, banners, or wearing or distributing items that influence the election, as well as producing or selling candidate symbols, are also prohibited.
In particular, acts of distributing, attaching, screening, or posting advertisements, greeting cards, posters, documents, printed materials, audio, or video that support, recommend, or oppose political parties or candidates are illegal.
Facilities such as street banners displaying the names or photos of prospective local election candidates must be voluntarily removed by the next month 2nd, which is 180 days before the election day.

A representative of the provincial election commission stated, "With the two major elections next year approaching, we will focus on cracking down on election involvement by public officials," adding, "In case of illegal acts, we plan to take strict measures using scientific investigation techniques."
