[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the Korea Women's Human Rights Institute will hold commemorative ceremonies, forums, and public participation events from the 25th to the 1st of next month in observance of the Women Violence Eradication Week.
The 25th is the United Nations (UN) designated "International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women," and since last year, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family has been operating the Women Violence Eradication Week. This year's slogan, "Our attention protects a daily life free from violence against women," emphasizes that we are the main agents in preventing violence against women and that the interest and participation of all citizens are necessary.
On the first day, the 25th, at 1:30 PM, the "2021 Women Violence Eradication Week Commemorative Ceremony" will be held online. During the ceremony, government awards such as the Presidential Citation and the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Citation will be presented to those who have dedicated themselves to preventing violence against women.
The Presidential Citation will be awarded to Heo Soon-im, the director of the domestic violence victim protection facility "Tteurak" in Jeju-do, who proposed a policy to support self-reliance funds for domestic violence victims, leading to the first-ever support for self-reliance funds through provincial budgets nationwide, and contributed to creating a child-rearing environment for residents of the protection facility for domestic violence victims.
Following the ceremony, from 2 PM, a forum titled "Achievements and Challenges of Policies Responding to Violence against Women (2017?2021)" will be held to discuss policy achievements and future tasks in various aspects such as legal and institutional improvements and victim support for responding to violence against women. The forum will begin with a keynote presentation by Lee Jeong, Senior Research Fellow at the Korean Women's Development Institute, followed by discussions on the direction that policies to prevent violence against women should take in terms of legal amendments and victim support.
Attorney An Ji-hee from the law firm Wimin will analyze "Achievements and Challenges in Establishing a Foundation for Preventing Violence against Women," and Kim Mi-soon, head of the Korea Women's Human Rights Institute, will analyze "Achievements and Challenges from the Victim's Perspective." They will explore highly perceptible policy measures to create a society safe from gender-based violence.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the Korea Women's Human Rights Institute will operate an online campaign to raise awareness about eradicating violence against women. On the "2021 Women Violence Eradication Week" campaign website, content such as information on violence against women, webtoons, and videos for violence prevention will be posted. Award-winning works from the violence prevention content contest (videos, webtoons, etc.) will be exhibited online, and public participation events such as slogan quizzes for the eradication week will also be held.
