PGA Tour "Next Year Will Be an Unprecedented Money Festival"... "Premier Golf League (PGL) Catfish Effect?"
PGL Increases Total Prize Money and PO Champion Bonus Significantly, Offers Various Incentives Including 'Season Top 10' and 'Player Impact Bonus'
[Asia Economy Kim Hyun-jun, Golf Specialist Reporter] "An unprecedented money feast."
The U.S. Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour is expanding the 'stage' even further next year. According to Golfweek on the 23rd (Korean time), "The size of the Playoffs (PO) will increase from $60 million (71.268 billion KRW) this year to $75 million (89.115 billion KRW)." The total prize money for the first PO event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and the second event, the BMW Championship, is $15 million (17.84 billion KRW) each, while the final third event, the Tour Championship, offers a bonus of $18 million (21.386 billion KRW) to the PO champion.
The total prize money for each tournament will also be significantly increased. The Genesis Invitational in February, hosted by the 'Golf Emperor' Tiger Woods (USA), the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the World Golf Championships (WGC) Dell Technologies Match Play in March, and the Memorial Tournament in June will each offer $12 million (1.4266 billion KRW). The Players Championship, known as the 'fifth major,' will offer a whopping $20 million (2.377 billion KRW). The four major championships are also expected to join the elite matches with prize money exceeding $15 million.
It is interesting that this is attributed to the launch effect of the Saudi Arabia-led Premier Golf League (PGL). Since 2023, the PGL has set a total prize money of $20 million per tournament and a winner's prize of $4 million (476 million KRW) for 18 events per season, including 12 in the U.S. It is rumored that they have already contacted Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson (all USA), and Justin Rose (England), guaranteeing an annual income of $30 million (35.68 billion KRW). Recently, Greg Norman (Australia) joined as the inaugural commissioner.
The PGA Tour is rushing to prepare various programs such as increasing the 'Comcast Business Tour Top 10' prize money based on regular season performance before the PO from $10 million to $20 million, and introducing a '15-event participation bonus' of $50,000 for players who participate in more than 15 tournaments. The total amount of the 'Player Impact Program' bonus has increased from $40 million to $50 million (59.46 billion KRW). Jay Monahan, PGA Tour Commissioner, emphasized differentiation from the PGL, saying, "We have a structure that benefits all players."
