Gyeonggi-do Faces Reality of Bed Shortage... 'Waiting for Allocation' Exceeds 200 for Two Consecutive Days
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Since the recent implementation of the phased daily recovery (With Corona) measures, the number of confirmed cases has surged mainly in the metropolitan area, increasing the number of people waiting for hospital bed allocation.
According to Gyeonggi Province, as of midnight on the 19th, the number of people waiting for hospital bed allocation in the province reached 222. Although this is 72 fewer than the 294 waiting as of midnight on the 18th, the spread in the metropolitan area continues, leading to a shortage of available beds.
From the 13th to the 19th, the daily number of people in Gyeonggi Province who waited more than one day for hospital bed allocation was recorded as 105 (13th) → 161 → 103 → 111 → 182 → 294 → 222 (19th). The number of people waiting for bed allocation, which was in the 100s until the 17th, increased to the 200s starting two days ago. Those who requested bed allocation by 8 p.m. on the day but were not assigned a bed by the next day are classified as 'waiting more than one day.' Local city and county governments are concerned that if the current trend of increasing confirmed cases and worsening bed availability continues, patients may need to be transferred to non-metropolitan areas.

The utilization rate of treatment beds in medical institutions in the province, combining general and severe beds, was 80.7% as of midnight on the day, slightly up from 80.1% the previous day. Among these, 200 out of 263 severe beds (utilization rate 76.1%) are in use, leaving 63 beds available. However, due to a shortage of operating staff, severe patient beds are effectively saturated. The province plans to sequentially secure an additional 508 beds dedicated to moderate and severe patients by the 3rd of next month, following the government's administrative order to secure beds.
