'Illegal Motorcycle Activities'... Gyeonggi-do Joint Intensive Crackdown with Related Agencies
Delivery Motorcycle Traffic Violations... Increase in Accidents and Deaths
Signal Violations, Helmet Non-Use, Center Line Infringement, Unreported Usage, etc.
[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] Gyeonggi Province, in collaboration with related organizations such as the National Police Agency and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, has launched an "Illegal Motorcycle Activity Crackdown" throughout November.
On the 17th, the province stated, "As motorcycle delivery services increase, disorderly motorcycle operation, including violations of traffic laws, and the rise in accidents and fatalities have emerged as social issues."
The crackdown targets motorcycles operating within the province that violate the 'Automobile Management Act,' such as failure to report use, no license plate attachment, damaged or obscured license plates, illegal tuning (LED lights, mufflers, etc.), and violations of the 'Road Traffic Act,' including riding on sidewalks, running red lights, not wearing helmets, failure to protect pedestrians, and crossing the center line.
In particular, the province's policy emphasizes the need for active enforcement against illegal motorcycles that intentionally damage or obscure license plates or do not attach them, as these vehicles threaten public safety through reckless driving and signal violations.
Furthermore, the safety negligence of delivery motorcycle drivers, who account for the majority of motorcycle accidents, causes various accidents, with violation behaviors reaching a serious criminal level.
Due to the surge in food delivery demand caused by COVID-19, the number of traffic law violations and traffic accidents involving delivery motorcycles has significantly increased.
Consequently, calls for indefinite crackdowns on delivery motorcycle violations and stronger penalties are growing louder.
According to the insurance industry, although deaths from delivery motorcycle traffic accidents continue to rise, the subscription rate for mandatory insurance for delivery motorcycle transport remains at only around 10%.
If illegal motorcycles such as those violating delivery motorcycle regulations are found, they can be reported immediately to the nearest local government office, online reporting sites, the mobile application 국민신문고 (People's Report), or 안전신문고 (Safety Report).
Traffic law-violating motorcycles are subject to fines or penalties, and illegal tuning is punishable by imprisonment of up to one year or a criminal fine of up to 10 million won.
