ETRI and LG Electronics Join Hands for Open Source Collaboration
Signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) for Mutual Cooperation in the Open Source Field
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and LG Electronics have joined hands to establish a cooperation system for open source compliance and research and development collaboration.
On the 16th, ETRI and LG Electronics announced that they exchanged a Letter of Intent (LOI) for mutual cooperation in the field of open source and decided to build a collaborative system to help domestic companies minimize open source risks.
The specific areas of cooperation between ETRI and LG Electronics include ▲ exchange of research and development technologies related to open source ▲ dissemination of open source compliance systems and contribution to service expansion ▲ cooperation and operation of domestic and international open source-related communities ▲ standardization activities for domestic and international open source compliance ▲ mutual cooperation to support the discovery of collaborative projects in the open source field.
Kim Hyung-jun, Director of the Intelligent Convergence Research Institute at ETRI, said, “This cooperation was made with the purpose of realizing a healthy open source market ecosystem and contributing to the development of the domestic ICT industry amid the rapid increase in open source utilization. ETRI will also put more effort into adding innovation to the existing research and development culture.”
Jang Moon-seok, Executive Vice President of the CTO Division at LG Electronics, said, “LG Electronics has played a leading role since the early introduction of open source in Korea and has nurtured in-house open source developers. We will contribute to building a software powerhouse together with domestic open source developers by establishing an environment that utilizes open source more safely.”

ETRI began responding to open source by introducing a public software certification mark in 2008, and has been systematically managing open source through the establishment of the first open source center among government-funded research institutes in 2017 and holding the first Tech Day among government-funded research institutes in 2020. LG Electronics has also played a leading role in the field of open source compliance by spreading the domestic open source compliance system FOSSLight as open source to the private sector since May.
