President Moon: "LNG Produced by FLNG Will Support the World's Carbon Neutral Journey"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in expressed his expectations on the 15th at the naming ceremony for the departure of the 'Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) Plant' held in Geoje, stating, "The LNG (natural gas) that FLNG will produce in large quantities will also be a great force in the world's journey toward carbon neutrality."
President Moon attended the 'FLNG Departure Naming Ceremony' held at Samsung Heavy Industries in Geoje, Gyeongnam, and in his congratulatory speech said, "Among fossil fuels, LNG has the lowest carbon emissions and the highest power generation efficiency during the process of achieving carbon neutrality, making it the best low-carbon energy source that can replace coal and oil."
FLNG is an offshore floating mobile complex plant capable of producing, storing, and shipping LNG. The main subject of this naming ceremony, the 'Coral-Sul' vessel, was ordered by Samsung Heavy Industries in 2017. It will depart for offshore Mozambique on the 16th and start LNG production next year at Mozambique's 4th offshore block, in which Korea Gas Corporation holds a 10% stake.
President Moon stated, "The Mozambique offshore gas field is considered the largest in the world," and added, "Once LNG production is in full swing, Mozambique's economy is expected to grow at an annual rate of over 10%, and simultaneous growth in infrastructure and manufacturing is also anticipated."
He expressed gratitude to the companies from various countries that collaborated on this project and added, "Along with Coral Sul FLNG, I hope Mozambique will leap forward as an economic powerhouse in Africa."
Emphasizing the excellence of K-shipbuilding, he also presented a future vision. President Moon said, "Korea is the world's leading shipbuilding nation. Korea has built not only the world's first and largest but also all four large FLNG vessels worldwide," and stated, "Korea plans to advance core technologies for eco-friendly ships and develop zero-carbon and smart ships."
President Moon expressed, "We expect Korea to be the optimal cooperation partner in Mozambique's large LNG carrier project," and said, "I pray that the Coral Sul FLNG safely completes its voyage through the Indian Ocean to Mozambique and leads Mozambique's economic growth and prosperity."
