National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, "Lee Kun-hee Donation Items Registration Procedures to be Completed by the End of Next Year"
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dong-hyun] The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) announced on the 12th that it plans to complete the registration of 1,488 donated items from the late Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of Samsung Group, by the end of 2022.
The MMCA is currently conducting thorough research and investigation into the basic information of the so-called 'Lee Kun-hee Collection,' including artist names, artwork titles, production years, materials, and techniques, with the goal of providing accurate information to the public. The museum plans to complete the registration of the artworks by the end of 2022.
The MMCA has secured the necessary budget for systematic registration, management, and utilization. For online services of the artworks, it is carrying out high-resolution photography and retouching, obtaining copyright permissions, and preparing explanatory texts. Starting from January 2023, the artworks will be gradually made available on the museum’s website.
The MMCA will hold a touring exhibition of the Lee Kun-hee Collection, beginning with a joint exhibition commemorating the first anniversary of the donation in the first half of 2022, co-hosted with the National Museum of Korea. The plan includes approximately 10 touring exhibitions: 2 in 2022, 4 to 6 in 2023, and 3 in 2024.
The donated artworks, after thorough research, will be transferred to the 'Lee Kun-hee Donation Hall,' scheduled to be established by 2027. The institution will actively cooperate to ensure systematic collection management and smooth utilization in future operations.
