TBS Radio 'Kim Eo-jun's News Factory' Interview... "Significant Progress in China's Export Procedures"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] Park Soo-hyun, Senior Secretary for Public Communication at the Blue House, stated in an interview with TBS Radio's 'Kim Eo-jun's News Factory' on the 10th regarding the urea solution controversy, "There will be an announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government within today," adding, "I understand they will also inform us about the arrival quantity and timing of the (Chinese urea solution)."
Park said, "What I can say today is that there has been significant progress in the export procedures."
Park explained, "The top priority is to bring in the urea solution quantities already contracted for import with China," and "we have been conducting diplomatic consultations with China through various diplomatic channels during this time."
This implies that a solution has been found regarding the Chinese export issue, which caused the urea solution shortage. Park stated, "As the President mentioned in yesterday's Cabinet meeting, I can confidently assure the public that there is no need to be anxious."
Regarding the issue of bringing in the urea solution quantities contracted with China, Park explained, "We expect that the government will be able to inform the public within today."
Park also mentioned mid- to long-term solutions related to the urea solution issue. He said, "We live in an era of global supply chains, and we are learning a valuable lesson that if one part is cut off, it has significant impacts," adding, "we are concurrently implementing measures to diversify imports in the mid- to long-term."
Park added, "We have been conducting consultations with several countries and have achieved considerable results with them, and the government believes these will help stabilize supply in the future."
Park said, "We understand that there are about 1,000 substances with high dependency on China," and explained, "the government's primary capability is to do its best to predict and, when issues arise, mobilize all resources to resolve them as quickly as possible."
Park stated, "Even with vaccines, there were initial concerns that it would take six years and four months, but by accepting those concerns and making our best efforts, we have now reached a world-class level together with the public."
Park emphasized again, "The government is truly doing its utmost to resolve the issue and report the results to the public. I can clearly say today that there is no need to be overly alarmed."
Park said, "An extraordinary Cabinet meeting is scheduled for just after 7 a.m. tomorrow. The government's measures will be approved there," and explained, "It will be mandatory for manufacturers and distributors to report their inventory levels to the government as a basic measure."
