Hong Suntak, Chairman of the Firefighters' Union, Meets with Congressman Heo Young to Discuss Establishment of Firefighters' Mental and Physical Training Center
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] On the 8th, Hong Suntak, Chairman of the Korean Federation of Trade Unions Firefighters' Union, met with National Assembly Budget and Accounts Special Committee member Assemblyman Heo Young (The Democratic Party, Gangwon Chuncheon-si, Cheorwon-gun, Hwacheon-gun, Yanggu-gun Gap) to request securing design costs for the construction of the Firefighters' Physical and Mental Training Center.
At the meeting, Hwang Seon-woo, Chairman of Gyeonggi, and Park Seok-ho, Chairman of Jeonnam, also attended.
The Chairman of the KFTU Firefighters' Union stated that the average lifespan of firefighters is 70 years, which is the lowest among all public service occupations. It is 12 years lower than that of political appointees. The proportion of those with health abnormalities among firefighters approaches 65%, while the overall public servants are in the 20% range. He pointed out that institutional support for the physical and mental health of firefighters, who are directly linked to the lives of the public, is still insufficient.
Furthermore, while the police have nine physical and mental training facilities and the Korea Coast Guard has four, the Fire Agency has no related facilities. He emphasized the need to secure at least design costs and promote construction so that firefighters responsible for public safety can lead healthy lives.
In addition, in 2022, a National Assembly forum was held to improve the treatment of firefighters, discussing current issues and seeking cooperation to find solutions.
Assemblyman Heo Young expressed sympathy for the firefighters' situation.
