On the 3rd, attending the first National Assembly campaign committee meeting chaired by candidate Lee, Seol said regarding next year's presidential election, "When thinking about what kind of president the people will elect, my first thought is that they will choose a sincere president."
He began by saying, "Since it's the first day of the campaign committee, I want to talk about the fundamental principles that we all know. The answer lies in the fundamentals, but people often forget them in daily life."
He continued, "I believe the truth lies in humility and honesty. The first criterion will be who fits these conditions, then how well they can perform and their drive. Next, people will consider whether they will wisely manage state affairs and implement good policies. If these three come together, that person will undoubtedly become president."
Seol added, "However, it's not easy to meet all these criteria. Since it's hard to find a perfect person, we have no choice but to look for the best among those who may be somewhat disadvantaged in various conditions. But looking at the presidential candidates currently out there, I don't think there is a big difference."
He went on, "They all have similar weaknesses and strengths, and success will depend on how well we present the candidate and appeal to the people. This applies not only to the candidate but to all of us. If we solve problems based on this principle, I believe we will succeed," he emphasized.
Although he stressed fundamental principles, some interpret Seol's remarks as expressing distrust toward candidate Lee. Seol, who was the general campaign committee chairman for Lee Nak-yeon’s camp, had previously taken a sharp stance by mentioning the possibility of candidate Lee’s arrest related to the Daejang-dong development scandal during the Democratic Party primary.
