Global COVID-19 Deaths Surpass 5 Million... "1 Year and 10 Months Since First Report"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] The number of deaths worldwide due to COVID-19 has surpassed 5 million.
According to the international statistics site Worldometer on the 1st, as of the 29th of last month, the cumulative number of COVID-19 deaths was recorded at 5,004,151. This marks 1 year and 10 months since the first COVID-19 death report in Wuhan, China, on January 11 of last year.
The cumulative death toll reached 1 million on September 10 last year, 2 million on January 6, 3 million on April 6, and 4 million on July 3. Although COVID-19 vaccinations began in earnest earlier this year, the speed of increase in deaths has not yet slowed due to the emergence of variant viruses.
The daily global death toll peaked at a record 17,580 on January 20 this year, then fluctuated, and as of the 31st of last month, the 7-day average daily death toll was around 7,000. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concern on the 24th of last month, stating, "Nearly 50,000 people die each week," and added, "We are still far from the end of the pandemic."

The country with the highest number of deaths is the United States, with approximately 766,000 deaths, followed by Brazil (about 608,000), India (about 458,000), and Mexico (about 288,000).
