Mixed-use Building Fire in Taiwan... At Least 9 Dead, 44 Injured (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] A fire in a mixed-use residential and commercial building in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan, on the 14th resulted in 9 deaths and 44 injuries.
According to Taiwan Central News Agency, the fire broke out at around 2:54 a.m. at the 13-story mixed-use building Cheongchungcheong Building located in Kaohsiung City.
The 40-year-old building had its 1st to 5th floors closed at the time, and about 120 households were residing on the 7th to 11th floors.
Kaohsiung fire authorities deployed 75 fire trucks and 159 firefighters and extinguished the fire around 7 a.m.
The fire authorities stated, "At the time of rescue, 9 people were already deceased and 44 were injured." Among the injured, 2 are in a state of impaired consciousness.

Authorities are not ruling out arson, considering that fierce flames were rising from a pile of items stacked on the 1st floor when they arrived at the scene.
