Police 'Victim Protection Promotion Committee' Ineffective... Only One Meeting Held in 8 City and Provincial Police Agencies
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The 'Victim Protection Promotion Committee' established in each city and provincial police agency to develop and implement victim protection policies tailored to local conditions has been criticized for being ineffective.
According to data submitted by the National Police Agency to Assemblyman Han Byung-do of the Democratic Party, a member of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee, half of the 16 city and provincial police agencies nationwide have held only one meeting since the formation of their Victim Protection Promotion Committees.
Specifically, these agencies include Gwangju Police Agency, Ulsan Police Agency, Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency, Chungbuk Police Agency, Chungnam Police Agency, Jeonbuk Police Agency, Jeonnam Police Agency, and Jeju Police Agency. Except for Gwangju Police Agency and Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency, which were first formed last year, and Seoul Police Agency, which held a meeting in February this year, no meetings have been held since 2020.
In particular, Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency formed the committee on December 16 last year to prepare victim protection measures following the release of Cho Doo-soon, but no meetings have been held since then.
Daegu Police Agency held the most meetings, convening a total of 53 since forming the Victim Protection Promotion Committee on March 16, 2015. Gyeongnam Police Agency held 5 meetings, Gyeonggi Bukbu Police Agency and Seoul Police Agency each held 4, and Gangwon Police Agency and Incheon Police Agency each held 3. Busan Police Agency and Sejong Police Agency have yet to form a Victim Protection Promotion Committee.
