Samsung Family Deposits Stocks Worth Over 5 Trillion Won to Pay Inheritance Tax
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jihwan] It has been revealed that the Samsung Electronics shares deposited in court by the Samsung family, including Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, to pay inheritance tax on the estate received from the late Chairman Lee Kun-hee, amount to more than 5 trillion won.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service's electronic disclosure system on the 6th, Hotel Shilla President Lee Boo-jin deposited 15.5 million shares (0.26%) of Samsung Electronics, which she held, at the Seoul Western District Court on the 28th of last month. Based on the closing price that day, the amount is approximately 1.1052 trillion won.
The total Samsung Electronics shares deposited in court by the Samsung owners to pay inheritance tax reached 71,858,587 shares (1.20%). Based on the closing price that day, the amount is approximately 5.1235 trillion won.
Hong Ra-hee, the wife of Chairman Lee Kun-hee, held the largest amount with 24,123,124 shares (about 1.72 trillion won). Following her were eldest son Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong with 5,835,463 shares (416.1 billion won), eldest daughter President Lee Boo-jin with 15.5 million shares (1.1052 trillion won), and second daughter Chairwoman Lee Seo-hyun of the Samsung Welfare Foundation with 26.4 million shares (1.8823 trillion won). Mrs. Hong has separately borrowed 1 trillion won from financial institutions by pledging 22,430,004 Samsung Electronics shares (about 1.5995 trillion won) as collateral to prepare for inheritance tax payments.
The estate of the late Chairman Lee Kun-hee, who passed away last year, was inherited by Mrs. Hong and their three children. The inheritance tax that the Samsung family must pay is estimated to reach 12 trillion won.
The Samsung family plans to pay the inheritance tax sequentially using the installment payment system over six times starting this year. In addition to Samsung Electronics, the Samsung family has also deposited shares of major inherited affiliates such as Samsung C&T, Samsung Life Insurance, and Samsung SDS in court.

Looking at individual deposits, Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong's deposited shares include 32,674,500 shares of Samsung C&T (3.9536 trillion won) and 7,116,555 shares of Samsung SDS (1.1208 trillion won). President Lee Boo-jin's deposited shares include 13,839,726 shares of Samsung Life Insurance (1.0075 trillion won) and 7,006,168 shares of Samsung C&T (847.7 billion won). Chairwoman Lee Seo-hyun's deposited shares include 5,109,603 shares of Samsung C&T (618.2 billion won) and 829,779 shares of Samsung SDS (130.7 billion won).
