[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Despite the surge in demands for tuition refunds due to COVID-19, it has been revealed that universities only provided nominal special scholarships.
According to the '2021 University COVID-19 Tuition Refund Special Scholarship Payment Status' submitted by the Ministry of Education to Kang Deuk-gu, a member of the National Assembly's Education Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, the university with the highest average special scholarship amount per person was Chugye University of the Arts, at 181,597 KRW.
Among the 63 universities that submitted related data to the Ministry of Education, Hongik University (110,202 KRW), Kyonggi University (107,326 KRW), and Kangnam University (100,000 KRW) also exceeded 100,000 KRW.
On the other hand, the university with the lowest average special scholarship amount per person was Seojeong University. Seojeong University awarded a special scholarship of 367,000 KRW to only one student, resulting in an average amount per person of just 59 KRW.
Following that were Jeonbuk National University (218 KRW), Hanyang University (316 KRW), Daedong University (803 KRW), Dongseo University (1,028 KRW), Dongguk University (1,640 KRW), Kyungpook National University (1,765 KRW), and six other universities that paid less than 10,000 KRW per person.
Last year, universities autonomously planned COVID-19 special scholarships and the Ministry of Education provided budgets accordingly, but this year, without such plans, the amounts paid by each university vary widely.
