[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] On the afternoon of the 10th, President Moon Jae-in held a video summit with Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh and agreed to elevate the strategic partnership between the two countries.
The Blue House announced on the 10th that President Moon held a video summit with President Khurelsukh of Mongolia for about an hour, during which they broadly exchanged views on ▲ ways to develop bilateral relations ▲ cooperation in response to COVID-19 ▲ practical cooperation in economy, environment, and health ▲ cooperation on the Korean Peninsula as well as regional and international stages.
In particular, President Moon and President Khurelsukh evaluated the development of a friendly cooperative relationship over more than 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1990 and agreed to elevate the bilateral relationship to a "strategic partnership."
The two leaders adopted the "Joint Declaration for the Development of the Korea-Mongolia Strategic Partnership," which includes specific cooperation plans by sector to advance bilateral relations to a higher, future-oriented level.
The two leaders highly appreciated that despite COVID-19, the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations last year was designated as the "Year of Korea-Mongolia Friendship," and various exchanges continued. In particular, President Moon evaluated the close cooperation in supporting the return of each other's citizens and sharing quarantine information during the COVID-19 response process. He also requested continued protection and support for Korean residents and companies in Mongolia.
President Moon expressed hope to strengthen practical cooperation with Mongolia, a key partner in the New Northern Policy, in the post-COVID era. He suggested continuously seeking synergy effects through linkage and cooperation between the New Northern Policy and Mongolia's Vision 2050.
The two leaders agreed to enhance connectivity between Korea and Mongolia by supporting the participation of Korean companies in Mongolia's ▲ energy supply ▲ smart city development ▲ distribution and logistics system establishment.
President Moon evaluated that Korea, a leading country in advanced technology, and Mongolia, one of the world's top 10 resource-rich countries, have great potential for practical cooperation by utilizing their complementary economic relations, and proposed expanding cooperation in eco-friendly industries such as green energy.
President Khurelsukh expressed agreement, stating that Korea's advanced technology could be applied to Mongolia's eco-friendly infrastructure construction and resource development, creating mutual synergy effects.
The two leaders agreed that overcoming COVID-19 and responding to climate change are common future challenges for both countries and decided to actively cooperate in ▲ health, medical care, and environment ▲ science and technology fields. They also agreed on the necessity of establishing an organic cooperation system to strengthen international public health capabilities in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
The two leaders shared the need for close cooperation to address environmental issues such as desertification prevention, air pollution improvement, yellow dust, and weather observation in Mongolia, and agreed to promote communication and cooperation between the two countries to lay the foundation for green growth.
President Moon evaluated that regional cooperation initiatives led by both countries, such as Korea's "Northeast Asia Quarantine and Health Cooperation System," "Northeast Asia Peace Cooperation Platform," and Mongolia's "Ulaanbaatar Dialogue," contribute to establishing a foundation for peace and stability in the region.
