Ministry of Science and ICT to Strengthen Public-Private Cooperation to Activate 5G Specialized Networks
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 7th that it held a 5G Specialized Network Experts Meeting and System Briefing at the 5G Specialized Network Support Center with the Korea Communications Agency (KCA).
At the 5G Specialized Network Experts Meeting chaired by Cho Kyung-sik, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, related experts and industry representatives from Korea Electric Power Corporation, Naver Labs, HFR, and others attended to exchange various opinions to revitalize the 5G specialized network market.
Kim Dong-gu, Executive Chairman of the 5G Forum (Professor at Yonsei University), emphasized that creating representative service models for 5G specialized networks is important for their activation, and that it is necessary to operate policies within a single framework that includes the telecommunications industry, ICT industry, and demand industries by establishing a cooperative system between the Specialized Network Support Center and private associations and organizations.
Additionally, Professor Kim Seong-ryun of Yonsei University pointed out the need for technical and institutional improvements regarding interference issues between 5G specialized networks, and Professor Lee Moon-kyu of the University of Seoul suggested the necessity of building a platform to verify wireless communication innovation technology research and development (R&D) conducted at universities.
In particular, industry representatives attending the meeting, including Naver Labs, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and HFR, raised and discussed practical difficulties hindering the adoption of 5G specialized networks by demand companies, such as ▲a system for continuous supply of 5G specialized network frequencies ▲simplification of frequency review conditions for 5G specialized networks ▲introduction of eSIM in 5G specialized networks ▲the need to form a private consultative body for 5G specialized networks.
Vice Minister Cho Kyung-sik stated, “The joint efforts and collaboration of related experts and the industry can be a great catalyst for revitalizing 5G specialized networks, so I hope everyone will join forces,” and added, “We will continue to strengthen public-private cooperation for the activation of 5G specialized networks by forming consultative bodies, and we will actively reflect the various opinions discussed at today’s meeting in our policies.”
At the 5G Specialized Network System Briefing, to help demand companies understand, explanations were given on ▲methods for joint use of 5G specialized network frequencies ▲key technical standards ▲frequency allocation and designation procedures ▲guidelines (draft) for building and using 5G specialized networks.
Measures were proposed to set in advance the scope of protected service communication areas necessary for joint use of specialized network frequencies by 5G specialized network operators in adjacent areas without interference, and to mutually coordinate in cases where some areas overlap.
Meanwhile, prior to the meeting and system briefing, an opening ceremony commemorating the establishment of the ‘5G Specialized Network Support Center’ was held as a preliminary event. The 5G Specialized Network Support Center, an organization under KCA, will be established in Sejong City and will provide technical consulting and other support necessary for demand companies, such as non-telecommunication companies expected to face difficulties in adopting specialized networks due to lack of expertise, to introduce 5G specialized networks.
