According to political media outlet The Hill on the 6th, Michael McCaul, the Republican ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said in a Fox News interview the previous day that the Taliban will not permit Americans to depart from the Afghan airport.
He emphasized that six aircraft carrying Americans and Afghan allies have attempted to leave Afghanistan, but the Taliban are holding them "hostage."
He further claimed, "This is turning into a hostage situation where the Taliban will not allow U.S. citizens to leave until they are fully recognized by the United States."
McCaul stated that the number of Americans currently remaining in Afghanistan is in the hundreds, which is significantly higher than the "around 100" mentioned last week by U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken.
Earlier, Ascend, a non-governmental organization operating in Afghanistan, told CBS News that two aircraft carrying between 600 and 1,200 people, including 19 U.S. citizens and 2 permanent residents, have been waiting for six days.
An NGO official reported, "Six civilian charter planes attempting to evacuate at least 1,000 people, including about 100 Americans, have been prohibited from taking off by the Taliban."
Concerns are rising that this situation will continue for some time as the Taliban, seeking recognition from the U.S., are refusing to allow American citizens to depart. Some speculate that the Taliban may try to leverage the takeoff permissions to pressure the State Department or airlines.
