Hanjin Accelerates Automation of Parcel Sorting Operations with 56 Billion KRW Investment
Introduction of Wheel Sorters at 55 Subterminals
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Hanjin announced on the 6th that it will invest 56.1 billion KRW to introduce 'wheel sorters,' automated delivery sorting devices, at 55 courier sub-terminals.
The wheel sorter is equipment that automatically sorts parcels by delivery area, maximizing operational efficiency by shortening sorting time and helping improve the working environment for delivery workers.
Hanjin currently operates wheel sorters at 5 out of 184 courier terminals and plans to introduce wheel sorters at 55 terminals starting from October this year through the end of the year, prioritizing terminals except for those where installation is difficult due to limited site area.
For other terminals, additional introductions are planned next year through site expansion, relocation, or facility improvements. Investment funds will be secured through the sale of real estate with idle or alternative sites available.
Hanjin is actively strengthening competitiveness across all business areas, including expanding courier terminal capacity and increasing investment in automation and IT systems. This year, it is expanding the East Seoul hub terminal and newly operating the Wonju and Sejong hub terminals. In July, it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Daejeon Smart Mega Hub Terminal, being built as a state-of-the-art smart logistics center aimed for operation in 2023.
Last month, Hanjin migrated its courier IT infrastructure to Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud, securing differentiated competitiveness capable of flexibly and swiftly responding to internal and external IT environmental changes such as surging parcel volumes.
