Four-Digit Cases for Two Months... Partial Easing of Quarantine Measures
On the morning of the 4th, medical staff at the temporary COVID-19 screening site installed in Seoul Station Plaza, Jung-gu, Seoul, are collecting a specimen from a member of the Military Field Support Team.
On the 4th, the number of new COVID-19 cases recorded in the early 1800s continued to maintain a four-digit count for the second consecutive month.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) announced that as of midnight on this day, 1,804 new cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 258,913.
This is 96 more than the previous day (1,708 cases, corrected from the initial 1,709) and 13 more than last Friday (August 28), when 1,791 cases were reported.
Regarding the infection routes of the new cases, 1,776 were locally transmitted, and 28 were imported from overseas.
By region, Seoul reported 564 cases, Gyeonggi 576 cases, and Incheon 98 cases, totaling 1,238 cases (69.7%) in the metropolitan area.
Non-metropolitan areas reported a total of 538 cases (30.3%), including Chungnam 97, Daejeon 50, Busan and Gyeongnam 49 each, Ulsan 47, Gangwon 45, Daegu 41, Gyeongbuk 39, Chungbuk and Jeonnam 28 each, Jeonbuk 25, Gwangju 24, and Sejong and Jeju 8 each.
The number of imported cases was 28, which is 6 fewer than the previous day (34).
Among these, 6 cases were identified during airport or port quarantine processes. The remaining 22 cases tested positive while in self-quarantine at their residences or temporary living facilities in regions including Gyeonggi (4), Gyeongnam (3), Seoul, Busan, Gwangju, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Jeonnam (2 each), and Daegu, Jeonbuk, Gyeongbuk (1 each).
Combining local transmissions and imported cases (excluding quarantine), the metropolitan area reported a total of 1,244 cases: Gyeonggi 580, Seoul 566, and Incheon 98. Nationwide, cases were reported across all 17 provinces and cities.
The death toll increased by 7 to a cumulative total of 2,315. The domestic average fatality rate stands at 0.89%. The number of critically ill patients totaled 376, an increase of 9 from the previous day (367).
The number of suspected cases tested at screening clinics on the previous day was 63,680, which is 513 more than the 63,167 tests conducted the day before.
As of midnight on this day, the cumulative positivity rate was 1.94% (258,913 out of 13,350,361 tests).
Despite the eighth consecutive week of strict 'social distancing' measures (Level 4 in the metropolitan area and Level 3 in non-metropolitan areas), the spread has not slowed, leading the government to extend the current distancing measures for another month until October 3.
However, some quarantine measures have been eased.
The operating hours for restaurants and cafes in Level 4 areas, including the metropolitan area, have been extended by one hour, from 9 PM to 10 PM.
Gatherings of up to six people, including those who have completed vaccination, are now allowed in restaurants, cafes, and homes. During the one week before and after the Chuseok holiday, family gatherings of up to eight people including vaccinated members are permitted at home.
In Level 3 non-metropolitan areas, gatherings of up to eight people including vaccinated individuals are allowed.
