Putin Unveils Far East Development Plan at Eastern Economic Forum
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] The 'Eastern Economic Forum,' aimed at achieving the development goals of the Russian Far East set by President Vladimir Putin, will be held in Vladivostok for three days from the 2nd to the 4th.
Started in 2015 and now in its 6th edition, this year's forum will be attended by representatives from over 50 countries, including South Korea. Discussions will focus on the development of Russia's Far East region, economic cooperation with neighboring countries, and strategies for attracting foreign investment, with President Putin himself attending to outline his vision for the Far East's development.
This year's meeting, held amid the COVID-19 pandemic, will be conducted in a hybrid format combining in-person events and virtual meetings.
From South Korea, Deputy Prime Minister for Economy Hong Nam-ki will participate via video conference in the Korea-Russia Business Dialogue scheduled for the 3rd. Ambassador Lee Seok-bae to Russia will attend the plenary session on the same day as the South Korean representative.
At the tourism session titled 'A New Era of Hospitality' held that day, Minister of Unification Lee In-young, attending virtually, emphasized the need for trilateral tourism cooperation among South Korea, North Korea, and Russia.

President Putin has shown interest in developing the Far East and Siberia, regions relatively underdeveloped compared to western Russia. This is considered a major policy task during Putin's 3rd and 4th terms in office (2012?2024).
