[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 2nd that the exhibition "MMCA Hyundai Series 2021 Mungyeongwon & Jeon Junho ? News from the Unknown, Village of Freedom" will be held at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Seoul, Exhibition Room 5.
The "MMCA Hyundai Series" is an annual exhibition sponsored by Hyundai Motor and hosted by MMCA, now in its 8th edition this year. As part of a mid- to long-term sponsorship partnership, Hyundai Motor and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art have supported large-scale exhibitions of mid-career Korean artists annually for 10 years since 2014.
In this exhibition, running from the 3rd of this month until February 20th next year, the new forms and content of the long-term project "News from the Unknown" by the duo artists Mungyeongwon and Jeon Junho, who have worked together for a long time, will be revealed. The two artists, who have collaborated since 2009, have been exploring the role of art in a rapidly changing world facing crises such as political-economic contradictions, historical conflicts, and climate change.

Especially, about 15 minutes of video work filmed against the backdrop of "Village of Freedom" in Daeseong-dong, Paju City, Gyeonggi Province, the only Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in South Korea, along with large-scale paintings, installations, archives, and photographs will be exhibited.
The two artists aimed to explore the role of art amid the complex crises humanity faces by reflecting the real world experiencing isolation and disconnection due to the COVID-19 pandemic through the special place of the Village of Freedom, isolated by conflicts and confrontations in human history. They also present an exhibition that crosses the boundaries between reality and fiction by simultaneously using actual records and fictional photos and videos dealing with the village’s history, expanding the viewers' imaginative horizons.
As part of this exhibition, a talk program called "Mobile Agora," where experts from various fields diagnose the current state of humanity and consider alternatives for the future, will be held five times. Participants include experts from architecture, science, and humanities, such as architect Professor Yoo Hyun-joon from Hongik University and ecologist Professor Choi Jae-chun, Chair Professor at Ewha Womans University.
