Chungnam, Buyeo to Establish Eco-Friendly Inland Aquaculture Complex
[Asia Economy (Hongseong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] An eco-friendly inland aquaculture complex will be established in Buyeo, Chungnam. Currently, three inland aquaculture complexes are operating nationwide.
Chungnam Province announced on the 20th that it was recently selected as the final winner in the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ “2021 Inland Aquaculture Complex Construction Project” competition and will create an advanced technology-based inland aquaculture complex with eco-friendly aquaculture facilities in the Gyueam-myeon area of Buyeo-gun.
The inland aquaculture complex construction project has been promoted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries since 2014 to enhance the competitiveness of the inland aquaculture industry by scaling up and modernizing inland aquaculture.
According to the project selection results, the province will invest a total of 7 billion KRW (3.5 billion KRW in national funds) by 2023 to establish an inland aquaculture complex covering approximately 30,000㎡ in the Gyueam-myeon area of Buyeo-gun.
The aquaculture complex will include eco-friendly aquaculture facilities for inland fish species, basic environmental facilities, water supply facilities, green spaces, and retention facilities.
In particular, the province explained that it plans to introduce a species-customized water treatment system that increases economic efficiency and reduces mortality rates to maintain an optimal growth environment, and to promote specialization of the local inland aquaculture complex through support for a smart package of high-efficiency aquaculture facilities centered on eco-friendly energy.
The province expects this project to generate employment for 40.7 people, production inducement of 1.31 billion KRW, and value-added inducement of 243 million KRW.
Currently, inland aquaculture complexes are operating in areas such as Goesan, Chungbuk; Hwasun, Jeonnam; and Namwon, Jeonbuk.

Jo Won-gap, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau of the province, said, “We will establish a large-scale inland aquaculture complex based on advanced technology to lay the foundation for fostering a 6th industry model in the inland aquaculture sector. Through this, we aim to ensure a stable supply of safe seafood and stable income for inland aquaculture households.”
