Jeju Region Records Highest Ever 44 COVID-19 Cases in One Day on the 12th
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] For the first time in the Jeju area, the highest number of confirmed cases exceeding 40 occurred.
According to Jeju's quarantine authorities on the 13th, a total of 44 COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the Jeju area in one day yesterday.
Accordingly, the cumulative number of confirmed cases has increased to 1,984 so far.
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced that 37 cases were confirmed by 5 p.m. the previous day, but an additional 7 cases were confirmed afterward.
The occurrence of 44 confirmed cases in one day in the province is the highest record since the first infection appeared in February last year, based on a single day.
The previous highest record was 34 cases on the 20th of last month.
The quarantine authorities estimate that the surge was caused by a new cluster infection linking a senior day care center in Jeju City and restaurants.
So far, 23 confirmed cases have been linked to the senior day care center cluster, and 8 confirmed cases have been identified related to the restaurant cluster.
The incidence rate per 100,000 population in Jeju rose to 294.08. Among the 17 metropolitan cities and provinces, the lowest rate is in Jeonnam at 121.84, while the national average is 424.82.
Looking at the infection routes of the 44 new confirmed cases, 33 are contacts of confirmed cases in Jeju. Excluding 21 cluster-related confirmed cases, 12 contacts of Jeju confirmed cases are individual cases, presumed to have been infected through meetings with prior confirmed cases in daily settings such as homes and workplaces.
Jeju's quarantine authorities reported that among the confirmed cases from the previous month, 13 are students or staff from 9 elementary, middle, and high schools, with 5 of them confirmed to have movements within the schools.
Among the 5 with school movements, 3 are students from Jungang Girls' High School (1) and Sehwa High School (2), where confirmed cases occurred on the 11th.
As of 11 a.m. on the day, 6 people related to Jungang Girls' High School were classified as contacts, with tests conducted on a total of 91 people. Among them, 2 tested positive and 89 tested negative.
Regarding Sehwa High School, as of 11 a.m., 131 people were classified as contacts, and 361 were tested. The results showed 2 positive and 334 negative cases, with tests ongoing for the remaining 25.
Additionally, 2 cases were confirmed as a staff member of Aewol High School and a student of Samyang Elementary School.
For Aewol High School, 120 people have been classified as contacts and are undergoing testing, while for Samyang Elementary School, tests are being conducted on 19 people along with epidemiological investigations.
Test results are expected to be notified sequentially starting from the afternoon of the day.
As of 11 a.m. on the day, 206 confirmed cases are in isolation in Jeju, with 1 case transferred to Seoul. The number of released from isolation is 1,778 (including 1 death and 24 transfers).
There are 137 available hospital beds in the province, and 956 people are under self-quarantine.
