Suncheon-si Hosts Special Exhibition Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the Deep-Rooted Tree Museum Opening
Introduction of Unreleased Artifacts Including Royal 'Juchilham' Under the Theme of 'To Contain and Embrace'
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 30th that it will hold a special exhibition titled "Damda, and Then Embrace" until December 26th to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Suncheon Municipal Deep-rooted Tree Museum.
This exhibition focuses on the ‘Ham (函)’ which constitutes a large portion of the late Han Chang-gi’s collected artifacts, displaying over 70 previously unreleased items ranging from the ‘Juchil Ham’ used by the royal family during the Joseon Dynasty to the ‘Jukje Ham’ used by commoners.
The exhibition is planned according to the purpose, material, and decorative patterns of the Ham, aiming to convey the intentions of ancestors who wished for happiness, longevity, and the prosperity of descendants through the decorative patterns of the Ham that held precious items.
It also introduces how the Ham does not remain as a relic of the past but is reborn as an artwork through new creative processes.
The exhibition catalog published alongside the exhibition not only introduces over 70 exhibited artifacts but also features unique Hams that are usually not seen in exhibitions, with brief explanations to help visitors understand the artifacts.
A Suncheon City official said, “To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Suncheon Municipal Deep-rooted Tree Museum, we are holding the ‘Ham’ exhibition, which embraced the universal wishes of life such as happiness and longevity, to continue the traditional cultural legacy that the late Han Chang-gi wished to pass on. It will be a great opportunity for children on summer vacation to experience traditional culture, and we hope it will be a time of hope for everyone striving to overcome the difficulties of COVID-19 and restore daily life.”
