Korea Aerospace Research Institute Develops Production Technology for Thermal Protection Materials of Space Launch Vehicles
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter]A technology to produce heat-resistant materials, a core component used in propulsion systems of space launch vehicles and guided weapon systems, has been developed domestically.
The Agency for Defense Development (ADD) announced on the 27th that it has developed a technology to manufacture Lyocell-based carbon fiber by applying continuous ultra-high temperature heat treatment technology.
Lyocell-based carbon fiber, developed by carbonizing cellulose fibers derived from wood pulp, possesses excellent insulation performance and thermal structural properties that maintain shape even under conditions of over 3,000℃, high pressure, and high speed. Since there was no domestic technology and reliance on imports for Lyocell-based carbon fiber, ADD began research in 2017 and succeeded this year in developing the necessary compound treatment and continuous ultra-high temperature heat treatment technology for manufacturing.
