'Dokdo, Sovereignty Disappears When Interest Fades' Seoul Library Dream Reminder Board Renovated
Urging Continuous Public Attention Against Japan's Territorial Claims over Dokdo
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government will renovate the Dream Writing Board at the Seoul Library on the 26th, ahead of the 76th anniversary of Liberation Day this year.
This Dream Writing Board, featuring a photo of Dokdo along with the phrase "If interest disappears, sovereignty disappears. Republic of Korea's Dokdo, protected by the people," was planned to convey the meaning of protecting Korea's sovereignty over Dokdo through the continuous interest of our citizens.
At a time when global attention is focused on the 32nd Tokyo Olympics, which opened on the 23rd, Japan's claims to sovereignty over Dokdo have intensified. Japan has marked Dokdo on the torch relay route on the official Tokyo Olympics website and continued its claims in the 2021 Japanese Defense White Paper, persistently provoking disputes over Dokdo, which is clearly Korean territory. This behavior contradicts the Olympic spirit that pursues peace and harmony among the world's people.
In response, the Seoul Metropolitan Government posted the Dream Writing Board with the message "If interest disappears, sovereignty disappears. Republic of Korea's Dokdo, protected by the people" to urge the public's attention against Japan's claims to Dokdo sovereignty. The message emphasizes protecting sovereignty over Dokdo through continuous public interest rather than a temporary or emotional approach to the issue.

Yoon Jong-jang, Director of Citizen Communication Planning at Seoul City, said, "At this moment ahead of the 76th Liberation Day, I hope this will be an opportunity to unite the voices of the people through interest in Dokdo and empower the Republic of Korea." He added, "Since Seoul and Tokyo established a friendship tie in 1988, the two cities have continued exchanges in various fields. Instead of further exhausting debates over Dokdo sovereignty, I hope to create a constructive future between Korea and Japan, and between the cities of Seoul and Tokyo."
