Gyeongbuk Province Provides 330,000 Free Loach Fish for 'Ecological Aquaculture'... "Income 2.5 Times Higher Than Traditional Rice Farming"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Gyeongbuk Province announced on the 23rd that the Indigenous Fish Industrialization Center of the Fisheries Resources Research Institute has begun trial farming by distributing 330,000 young native Misguri fish free of charge to 11 local farms and fisheries to revitalize the eco-friendly rice paddy aquaculture industry.
The young Misguri fish distributed this time are healthy fry measuring 3 to 4 cm in body length, carefully raised for about 60 days after starting fry production in May. The Indigenous Fish Industrialization Center selected farms and fisheries with appropriate facilities and qualifications through applications from those wishing to engage in eco-friendly aquaculture and on-site inspections.
The Misguri fish used in eco-friendly aquaculture live on the paddy bottom, supplying oxygen to rice roots, removing weeds, and controlling pests, while their excrement is utilized as natural fertilizer. The eco-friendly aquaculture method using Misguri is emerging as a new farming technique and is analyzed to generate about 2.5 times higher income compared to pure rice farming.
The Indigenous Fish Industrialization Center has been continuously conducting research on artificial seed production and rice paddy eco-friendly aquaculture technology development since 2015 to replace imported Chinese Misguri with domestically farmed Misguri.
In particular, the Janggi-buk regional specialty crop group farms in Pohang City are branding the Misguri harvested from rice paddies (Janggi-buk Misguri), promoting industrialization, and contributing to income increase by using them as ingredients in restaurants in cooperation with the Agricultural Technology Center.

Moon Seong-jun, Director of the Fisheries Resources Research Institute of Gyeongbuk Province, stated, "Eco-friendly rice paddy aquaculture of Misguri is an inland water industry that can respond to environmental changes such as aging rural communities and FTAs. We will do our best to develop initial feed organisms and aquaculture technologies that can mass-produce Misguri seeds at low cost and transfer them to farms and fisheries to become a new income business model."
