On the 18th, five days before the opening of the Olympics, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced that 1,008 new COVID-19 cases were reported. The number of new cases decreased by 402 compared to the previous day but increased by 394 compared to a week ago on the 11th.
The Japanese government declared a 'state of emergency' in response to the spread of COVID-19 in Tokyo starting from the 12th. The declaration is set to last until the 22nd of next month. This period includes the entire Tokyo Olympics, which will be held from the 23rd of this month to the 8th of next month.
