Gyeonggi-do Implements 'Wild Bird Collision Prevention Ordinance' to Prevent Deaths of Birds
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province announced the "Wild Bird Collision Prevention Ordinance" on the 14th to prevent accidents where wild birds collide with and die from glass windows of buildings or transparent soundproof walls.
This ordinance was enacted in response to the increasing need to prevent wild bird collisions as transparent artificial structures have increased to enhance the openness inside buildings and improve urban aesthetics.
According to the Ministry of Environment, about 8 million birds die annually from collisions with transparent walls and similar structures. This means 15 birds die every minute.
The ordinance allows the governor to implement wild bird collision prevention measures, such as attaching bird collision prevention tape to government-managed buildings or transparent soundproof walls within the province.
It also establishes grounds for requesting reduction measures from mayors, county heads, and business operators, investigating bird collision accident status, and includes provisions for wild bird collision prevention education, publicity, and establishing cooperative systems with the central government and city/county governments.
Earlier, Governor Lee Jae-myung visited Hanam Misa New Town in November last year and emphasized the importance of coexistence with wildlife by personally attaching bird collision prevention tape and film to transparent soundproof walls along with about 70 volunteers.
A provincial official stated, "With the enactment of this ordinance, the pilot project for bird collision prevention facilities on artificial structures currently underway at five locations from this month is expected to gain momentum," and added, "We will do our best to protect wild birds and contribute to creating a healthy ecosystem."
Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province announced the "Gyeonggi Bird Collision Prevention Policy Promotion Plan" in February and is conducting a pilot project installing prevention facilities (sticker films) in areas with a high number of bird collisions identified through NatureRing (an ecological observation app).
The pilot project target areas are five locations including ▲around Sindong Intersection in Suwon ▲around Samseong LH Complex 12 in Goyang ▲south side of Wonheung Elementary School in Goyang ▲around Misa Lake Park in Hanam ▲around Okbit Middle School soundproof walls in Yangju.
