Cho Kuk Posts Final Statement of Spouse Jeong Gyeong-sim on Facebook
Jeong Gyeong-sim "Lost 15kg in an Instant... Fainted Several Times During Investigation"
"Need to Recall Old Memories to Defend, but Brain Seems to Have Shut Down"
[Asia Economy Reporter Na Yeeun] Former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk posted the final statement of his wife, Professor Jeong Gyeongshim of Dongyang University, in the appellate court on social networking service (SNS), and Go Minjung, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, shared it again on her Facebook. In her final statement, Professor Jeong appealed to the court, saying, "Tremendous criticism and ridicule have poured down again on me and my family." She also refuted the allegations of forging the certificate of commendation, saying it was of little significance.
On the 13th, Go posted on her Facebook, "Please read this," sharing the full text of Professor Jeong's final statement that former Minister Cho posted on SNS the day before (the 12th).
Regarding the allegations of forging the certificate of commendation raised by the prosecution in the indictment, Professor Jeong stated, "As testified by several professors who planned and operated the program together in the first trial court, the certificate was issued following the recommendation of fellow professors who learned that my daughter helped."
She added, "This certificate was not a document of great significance. In the case of local universities, the certificate issued under the name of the president has relatively greater influence on the local community. Therefore, at that time, for programs targeting outsiders, we issued completion certificates and awards under the president's name regardless of elementary, middle, or high school." She continued, "It was not my daughter who used her mother, but I who used my daughter. Now, to be subjected to such trials and pain, I regret it a hundred times over, wishing I could go back to that time."

Especially regarding the prosecution's investigation, she raised her voice, saying, "The prosecution secured a vast amount of information, including trivial conversations among family members, through the seizure of PCs, but I had no materials for rebuttal or explanation in my hands. I felt that the prosecution had already decided on the direction and that my answers were merely tools to find faults."
Furthermore, concerning real estate speculation, she appealed, "I did not engage in real estate speculation, did not purchase luxury goods, and did not even receive help from domestic helpers, working tirelessly." She added, "Although I could not perform commendable good deeds, I have lived trying not to harm others."
Meanwhile, the court will hold the appellate sentencing trial for Professor Jeong on the 11th of next month. In the appellate sentencing trial for Jeong, who is on trial for admission fraud and private equity fund-related charges, the prosecution requested the court to sentence her to seven years in prison, impose a fine of 900 million won, and confiscate 164.61 million won.
